Professor Alexander Bilson Darku is a distinguished economist with extensive experience in academia, international development, and economic policy analysis. He currently serves as an International Senior Scholar at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Accra, and Associate Director at the Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy, University of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, where he is also a Professor of Economics.
With over two decades of teaching, research, and consulting experience, Professor Darku has taught at leading institutions including the University of Lethbridge, McGill University, and Concordia University, focusing on International Economics, Macroeconomic Policy, and Development Finance. His research interests encompass international finance, trade, macroeconomic policy, and economic development. His scholarly works have appeared in several high-impact journals such as the International Journal of Finance and Economics, Applied Economics, Journal of Developing Areas, and Maritime Economics & Logistics.
Beyond academia, Professor Darku has contributed significantly to international policy initiatives. He worked as an Economist and Consultant at the World Bank, Washington, D.C., where he participated in preparing Country Economic Memoranda and Economic and Sector Reports for Ethiopia, Sudan, and Tanzania. He also served as a Consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Ghana, assisting the Government of Ghana in public financial management reforms and fiscal policy design under the PUFMARP and BPEMS programs.
Professor Darku is a co-author of several books, including The Balance of Payments Analysis of Developing Economies: Evidence from Nigeria and Ghana and The Public Policy Making Process in Ghana: How Politicians and Civil Servants Deal with Public Problems. His scholarly contributions continue to inform economic policy and research in Ghana and internationally.
He holds a PhD and Master’s degree in Economics from McGill University, Canada, and MPhil and BA (Hons.) degrees in Economics from the University of Ghana. He is a member of the American Economic Association and the Canadian Economic Association, and serves as Editor of the Ghana Policy Journal and Associate Editor of the Foreign Trade Review.
Professor Darku has received multiple awards for academic excellence, including the University of Lethbridge Student Union Teaching Excellence Award (2016) and Faculty Book Awards (2007, 2011).
